What makes the show Itty Bitty?
All works of art entered must be extra small or miniature.
The Itty Bitty Art Show will run the month of June from the 1-30th.
From this year’s Judge former FAS Gallery member - Cynthia Jacobi
“Judging a show like the Itty Bitty with small parameters may be more of a challenge than a larger scaled show. The image or form needs to fit within specific dimensions.
I used several criteria, applying them to all of the works when making my choices.
My initial positive reactions counted heavily.
Did it keep my attention?
How did it make me feel?
Did it introduce a thought, concept, or idea to a higher level?
Did it tell a story or was it purely decorative?
Ultimately, did I want to see more of this artist’s work?
I awarded 3rd Place to “No Planet B - Act Now,” by Emy Syrop, acrylic and oil on a deep cradle board. There is a companion piece, “Climate Justice Now.” The theme and call to action speaks loudly to me. Emy, a well recognized Newport painter, placed vivid red lettering over realistic, lovely ocean scenes which could stand on their own. I always want to see more of Emy’s work.
The 2nd Place award goes to Jan Kenyon for “Chick.” This 3-D felted wool bird has whopping Cute Factor. Jan, an experienced figurative felter, keeps on creating a higher caliber of work. The feather patterns and facial expression will make viewers smile. Do chickens have faces? This one does. The tactile texture of the wool makes one want to touch it. I did and so did the person next to me. “Chick” seems to have that effect.
1st Place is awarded to “Shadow Landing,” by Megan Shoup, a photographic image transfer. The black and white beach landscape is softened with a marine atmosphere. Shadows of birds reflect on wet sand. It conveys the spiritual essence of a beach walk on a misty day. An image transfer seems the perfect technique to convey this emotion. The viewer may want to walk this beach at length. The skill and intent of Megan earn this top award.
Thank you for the opportunity to award this wonderful show.
